Spring has Sprung

Spring has definitely sprung here at Mount Ephraim and we were delighted to have opened our gates again to the Gardens and Tea Room on Wednesday 3rd April. We’ll be open as usual on Wednesdays to Sundays and Bank Holidays from 11am until 5pm until the end of September.

We’ve certainly kept ourselves busy over winter maintaining the gardens, hosting weddings and parties and welcoming guests to our B&B. We’ve also been super busy with our latest venture – renovating The Garden Wing which opens this month.  As ever there’s always much to do and the quieter months have allowed us time to decorate the main Dining Room and replace our fabulous red carpet on our staircase.

On a personal note it’s been a really interesting first 12 months in my new role. Running your family business has its challenges but I’m loving the variety of the role and am hugely proud of what we offer here. A special thanks to our very small team here at Mount Ephraim for their continued hard work and to my family for all their support. A huge thanks to Stella English for her vision and drive in the interior design and furnishing of the rooms and to Elliot Horton for his skill and expertise with the decorating.

Notes from our Head Gardner

Well here we are again. Ready for another visiting season. Or at least as ready as a working garden can be, at any given time of year.
Thankfully we only lost a handful of trees during the winter gales none of which were specimen trees or of historical importance, and luckily they all blew over without doing any damage to the rest of the gardens.
Our camelias are still flowering prolifically and some have been doing so since before Christmas, and it has been a good year for the magnolias too. Surprisingly they have weathered the gales and hail storms very well.

Daffodils have been another story however, with very poor numbers of blooms compared to previous years. This seems to be an ongoing problem, which I am sure has a lot to do with the long dry periods that we get here, which hinders the bulbs from rejuvenating themselves after flowering. Our roses are all looking in good order at the moment, which will hopefully mean an impressive show of blooms in a month or two.

Some new planting of shrubs on the rock garden and especially the water garden is intended to add colour to the gardens in spring and summer, and as they mature, will add another attraction for our visitors to enjoy.
