Summer at Mount Ephraim

…and what a summer it’s been! Long hot hazy days just keep on coming without any sign of rain. It’s beginning to take its toll in the gardens with some trees and plants showing signs of stress but it’s predominantly the lawns that suffer most as none are irrigated over the summer as it’s rare we experience weather like this! The mixed border however gets watered regularly and it’s still maintaining a good show of colour. The roses have finished flowering early and are slow to show signs of new growth, but on a plus note our magnolia grandiflora is flowering well with its huge lemon scented blooms providing their usual talking point and it will continue to flower until the autumn. The koelreuteria paniculata is just beginning to flower too, although its blooms are much more fleeting and will be gone in a week or two. Nevertheless we’ve had some wonderful comments about the gardens this year as usual, and the blue skies and warm days are proving a delight for most visitors. We will just have to wait to see what the weather will bring come August and September!
